Mengkabong Fireflies & Sunset River Cruise

Mengkabong, home to Bajau Sea Gypsies who set foot on land in the early 19th century. Presently they are known as fisherman who resides in small village built on water (ie: house built on stilts and connected by narrow wooden planks). The journey takes a 45-mins drive from the City.  High tea/ local refreshment will be served before proceed for memorable and educational river cruise tour about the importance of Mangrove forest with beautiful nature scenery along the river where water streams peacefully and see sea real life one of our famous indigenous tribe Bajau fisherman lifestyle  The cruise inclusive of traditional crab catching activities. Visit to the local Oyster/ Mussels Farm, fun fishing before heading to the river mouth to catch the spectacular view of sunset on white sandy beach. Before heading for night river cruise to search for glimpses of fireflies slowly lighting up and decorating the mangrove trees along the river like a Christmas tree. Dinner included before returning back to your respective hotel.

Sample Itinerary

1430HRS - Pick up from hotel and proceed for another 30-45 min to Mengkabong.

 

15:30HRS - Upon arrival at the jetty, High tea or local refreshment will be served for you before proceed for a memorable and educational river cruise tour.

 

16:00HRS - River cruise starts. Here you will be brief about the importance of Mangrove forest with beautiful nature scenery along the river where water streams peacefully and see sea real life one of our famous indigenous tribe Bajau fisherman lifestyle. 

 

The cruise is inclusive of traditional crab catching activities plus a visit to the local Oyster/ Mussels Farm, fun fishing before heading to the river mouth to catch the spectacular view of  sunset on white sandy beach! The sunset view there is absolutely stunning! You do not want to missed it!

 

18:30HRS - Back to the jetty for dinner (local style dishes).

 

19:00HRS - Now continue for night river cruise to search for glimpses of fireflies slowly lighting up and decorating the mangrove trees along the river like Christmas tree!

 

19:30HRS - Overland back to Kota Kinabalu City.

20:30HRS - Estimated arrival hotel, depending on traffics or the weather conditions.
